How-to Select & Install a Custom Motorcycle Gas Tank

Posted by: Kenny  :  Category: Articles

A custom motorcycle gas tank is one of the most important things you will need for your custom motorcycle. Its the piece on your bike that will be first noticed, so make sure you get a good paintjob.

Picking out a gas tank should be relatively easy based on what you are looking for. When looking for the proper motorcycle gas tank you will want to think convenience, reliability and looks.

Essentially, the bigger your custom motorcycle gas tank is, the less you will need to fill-up and the more cool paint you can use. The less you stop the more you enjoy the ride. There are plenty of options for a custom motorcycle gas tank that you can choose from. There are many motorcycle gas tank styles that can be built or purchased to suit your requirements. One of the many kinds of tanks that are available for your motorcycle (or chopper) are stretch tanks. Stretch tanks resemble exactly what their name implies. The stretch tank is a bit longer and stretched so it looks cooler, follows the lines off your bike and flows better.

Usually you can find these types of gas tanks in many sizes 2", 3"or 5" stretch and you can always weld some extensions to make it fit your ride or mold it directly into the frame rails or oil tank.

These custom motorcycle gas tanks are a blend of old and new gas tanks, and are an excellent choice that can perform nearly anything you want your custom motorcycle to be capable of attaining.

Then there are custom "Radical" style tanks. These tanks look great on any showbike but usually do not hold as much gas so be prepared to stop more often. You should also be prepared to discuss your bike with those around you as you pump your fuel. These are eye catching style tanks, sure to make that minivan driver remember when he wanted nothing but his bike and his girl.

There are also tons of other tanks, Sportster tanks , King tanks, Mustang tanks, Dyna tanks, Fatbob tanks, peanut tanks, bobber tanks, coffin tanks, chopper tanks. They come with a variety of gas cap styles: flush caps , pop-up caps, aircraft-style and and and... its endless.

All tanks should be mounted for proper fitment, then removed, cleaned and sealed on the inside and pressure tested before painting to prevent leaks. Again, there are may ways of sealing the tank but no matter how you do it, it must be done.

Also when mounting your tank do not stress any of the mounting tabs when tightening down the tank. This can cause cracking of the finish and weakening of the mounting tabs. Check all the mounts and fuel line fittings before filling with fuel.

An in-line fuel filter is always a good idea with any fuel system. Don't just trust the screen around your petcock to keep any dirt out of your carburetor.

Now you pick out a tank that fits your needs.

Ride safe and don't run out of gas!

Is a Hard Tail Frame Right for Your Motorcycle?

Posted by: Kenny  :  Category: Articles

If you are considering building a custom bike, you'll need to determine whether to select a hard tail frame (also called a rigid frame), or a swing arm frame. Deciding on a frame is not to be taken lightly because there are some significant differences in the frame styles.

The hard tail frame is a single piece frame. The rear motorcycle wheel assembly attaches directly to the frame, as opposed to a soft tail frame which is made of two pieces of tubing connected at a pivot joint. That is the source of the nomenclature; the frame really does have a hard tail. The result is that there is no rear suspension to give that 'floating' feel to the ride.

Initially, all motorcycles were hard tails. The bent tubing frames allowed the rear hub to be attached through the one piece frame. That is still the way hard tails are put together today.

The Harley-Davidson Duo-Glide, released in 1958, gave riders the first option of purchasing a bike with rear suspension. Purists, however, still love the ride and feel of the hard tail frame.

Jesse James custom bike builder and owner of West Coast Chopper, in a recent documentary about the history or motorcycles, stated that he loves the hard tail ride because it allows the rider to truly become part of the road. There is no 'bounce' and the road vibrations are not absorbed by shocks, providing a hardcore sensation unlike the swing arm motorcycle frames.

Hard tail frames provide a somewhat rougher ride; people that experience back pain during long rides almost always avoid this frame style. Kidney-jarring jolts can result from hitting bumps. Yet in this modern day, most roads are relatively smooth.

Some people simply love the ride provided by the rigid hard tail frame. Others really hate the differences in ride. The bottom line is that you want to select the right frame for your motorcycle based on your personal needs, expectations, and planned use.

If you want a cross-country touring cycle, a hard tail may not the right choice be for you. If you want to build the ultimate custom show chopper, this frame style could be perfect for you. If you are young, have lots of stamina, are in great physical condition and don't mind a bit of kidney jolting, the hard frame is a viable option. However, if you want to ride from New York to California when you retire, most likely you'll be much happier riding a soft tail.

The choice of hard tail frame or soft tail frame is entirely a personal choice. Just remember, it takes a lot of work to change frames, so think through exactly what you expect from your motorcycle before making a decision about whether a hard tail frame is the best solution for your custom motorcycle.

Eight Reasons to Build Your Own Chopper or Kit Bike

Posted by: Kenny  :  Category: Articles

Choppers are great fun to ride, and if you want to build one it can be an amazing and rewarding experience. You can buy one from a former owner or from a custom motorcycle builder. Here are eight reasons to build your own custom chopper or kit bike:

1. Kit bikes are easy to build compared to a "start from scratch" chopper. You start with a rolling chassis and go from there. You are only committing to the frame, motor and front end when you go with a kit bike. If you have never built a motorcycle before, the kit bike is the way to start and then later build a scratch chopper. You'll end up with a classy ride you love even when you begin with a kit.

2. The customization is entirely up to you. You choose the accessories and features for your motorcycle and the end product won't be like every other bike on the road!

3. The experience is a great reason to build. Not only will you learn about motorcycle design, balancing and ergonomics, you will know how every single part in the motorcycle works and be able to perform repairs easily.

4. The chopper you build, whether from a kit or from scratch, will fit you and your personal needs. If you love suicide shifts, you can have it. If you want a lower profile for easy balance when stopped, you can design that right into the motorcycle. Ladies, especially, love the custom motorcycle because many petite women don't feel comfortable with a high profile motorcycle, yu can build the motorcycle to suit your body.

5. Building your own chopper is a LOT less expensive than building a built machine. If you design and build your own scoot, you'll get what you want at a fraction of the price a custom builder will charge. After all, you are putting out all the sweat equity yourself!

6. By building your own chopper, you can spread the expense over a period of time rather than having to pay for everything up front. When you buy a showroom motorcycle, whether chopped or not, you have to pay for everything at one time. This often means financing becomes involved and you have to plan for all those payments. If you are already on the road on a stock bike or another chopper, you can perform your build of a new chopper over a period of time, adding parts as you have the money. Sure, this may not be the fast track to having a completed ride, but it can often represent the sensible way to get what you want and have it paid for in full when you first ride out! You'll save tons of money on interest chargers over financing.

7. Bonding with friends and fellow riders is another great reason to build a bike. Usually when you start a build, friends drop by to help and see the progress. This allows quality time to chat and share tips and tricks. Sure, bonding can occur on the road, but it's nice to have some garage time with your buddies.

8. Family members are often more supportive of the motorcycle when you are putting time into it at home yourself. It keeps you at home and the whole family can participate in the project. Even the kids will get excited as the motorcycle comes together!

Complete Motorcycle Kits – Building a Chopper the Easy Way

Posted by: Kenny  :  Category: Articles

If you are looking to create your own, unique chopper, complete motorcycle kits can be extremely beneficial to your project. Motorcycle kits can end up saving you quite a bit of money and time because they provide the convenience of having all necessary parts in one place. Building custom motorcycles has become increasingly popular and so, there is a greater demand for complete motorcycle kits.

Most kits are dedicated to providing you with all necessary components to build your dream custom bike on your own. If you chose to get parts separately or used, you will not have the satisfaction of knowing that all the parts are new and will work well together. Many times, ordering parts online or from a mechanic will force you to wait and you may not even get what you want. With kits all parts will be available as and when you need them.

Motorcycle kits generally include all technical parts so you can build your custom bike. Parts such as the chassis, the engine and the wheels are all included, although, paint, decals and other parts related to the design will have to be purchased separately to add a touch of your personality to your custom bike. Mirrors and speedometers are also not included, but these items can usually be purchased for relatively low prices.

Many people who build their own custom bikes will advise you to buy parts used, however, although it may save you some money, you may not be making the best decision. Parts that you get from junkyards or sales may not work as well as new parts because they are too old. It is also impossible to know how old the part is, so you will not know how long it will last, or if it will even work with the rest of your bike.

You will want to make sure all of the parts are working correctly because it can affect your safety when building the bike as well as riding it. Using a kit is the best way to stay safe because you know where the parts are coming from and that they are brand new. If a part has been over used, it can actually endanger you. Many times, when building a custom from scratch, cutting corners to save money is not the best idea.

For those of us just getting into the hobby of building our own custom motorcycles or even experienced builders, a complete motorcycle kit can make the process go much smoother. Many of the complete kits come with detailed instructions so if this is your first time, you can still create the bike of your dreams. After you finish will all the technical parts, you can begin customising your bike and really make it your own.

Custom Chopper Kits – The Easy Way to Build Your Own Chopper

Posted by: Kenny  :  Category: Articles

When building the perfect chopper, it can be difficult if you do not have the right parts or knowledge. However, chopper kits have made creating a chopper to your liking much easier than before as well as much more affordable. The chopper you choose to create using a custom kit can easily be made to reflect your personal style and be as different and creative as possible. Up until these custom chopper kits became available, many people did not have this luxury and the increasing interest in custom choppers has created a need for custom chopper kits.

When choosing the right kit to use, you will first want to begin with deciding on the design of the chopper and the style. This will help you narrow down your choices . You will also want to think about the amount of money you are willing to spend and if there are any specific parts that should be included in your chopper kit. Once you have decided, this you are ready to begin choosing the perfect kit.

Typically, custom chopper kits will include everything you need to build your dream chopper. Kits will include parts such as an engine, tires, exhaust pipes, a chassis and other technical parts that will get your custom chopper up and running. Kits are not limited to these parts and you can include specific parts that will help create the chopper you want.

Unfortunately, custom chopper kits do not often include things that will help with the design of your chopper. Things such as mirrors, paint and speedometers will have to be purchased separately so you can choose according to your own taste. There are many chopper kits that do offer special parts that help your chopper reflect your style and will not have to be purchased separately.

Although many people will advise you to use used parts in order to save money, it is probably not the best idea. If you want to ensure optimal performance, you may want to look to chopper kits that have the best parts. However, if you do chose to purchase used parts, make sure there is not any damage or the parts are not over used because it will affect the performance of your chopper.

Some custom kits allow for the safe conversion of ordinary choppers into one which reflects your style and is completely original. However, if you proceed without proper knowledge or understanding on how to use the kit properly, you could be putting yourself in danger when building the chopper as well as when riding it. Custom chopper kits are a great way to modify your chopper, but it is important to always to stay safe.

Want a Chopper? Build Your Own!

Posted by: Kenny  :  Category: Articles

Motorcycle chopper kits are a growth industry. But what does that mean to you and me? Well one thing that we know is that we will have more choppers to ogle at. There is not a single day that goes by without more and more pictures of chopper bikes that have just been finished showing up in all the motorcycle magazines. Then at the weekends, when we are on our “hot” rides, we will see four or five show finish level bikes. There are more choppers around now than there have been in the last twenty five years.

Most of these choppers have been built from motorcycle chopper kits, the “bike in a box” approach. But hey, don’t knock it! Building your own chopper has never been easier. There are rolling chassis kits, complete bike kits, and frame manufacturers give you a multitude of choice when it comes to take the plunge and buy a motorcycle chopper kit.

Thirty years ago, the old school chopper builders had to start with a stock bike off-the-shelf and literally chop it to pieces. With the modern chopper kits, there is a viable alternative to taking the cutting torch to your favorite soft tail!

Nowadays, you have a cheap and easier way to build the bike from the ground up. When you take the cost of buying a new bike and the expense of chopping it, it works out much cheaper to start from step one, and your chopper kit. Instead of tossing away the parts that you'll never use again, you can start building your own bike with the parts that you really need. All the parts are included in the motorcycle chopper kit, along with comprehensive instructions.

One of the first questions that people ask when considering buying a kit is how will my bike stand outs from all the other chopper kits? Well think of it this way, you are going to buy a chopper kit. A pile of unassembled raw metal. No paint, no real finish, just a blank canvas. Is your taste in paint jobs likely to be the same as the next guy, who buys the very same kit? I don't think so. What about your taste in bolt-ons, seats, exhausts? Just because you buy the kit doesn’t mean every little thing has to be just so. That is the whole point isn’t it? It's very easy in this way to build your own custom chopper from a chopper kit.

Another big question is, “How long”? The answer to that is as long as it takes. Even on the kit bikes, which are supposed to be designed to fit together like a glove, you are going to run into some snags. It can’t be avoided!

If you want a more concrete guide, try this. An experienced kit builder (though not a professional) I spoke to reckons it took 10 full days to build his last chopper from a kit. For someone less experienced it could take a couple of days longer. Twelve 9 hour days works out at 108 hours. Over evenings and weekends, this could drag out to three or four weeks of living in a pile of motorcycle parts! So be prepared to literally live the experience if you are going to take the plunge.

What about the practical side? Well, there is no substitute for experience. The place to start building up your experience with the mechanical side of building to kit bike is with your current ride. Make sure all you can do the basic maintenance on your motorcycle, and then start to do some simple disassembling. Take off the tires, take off the exhaust, real basic stuff; all of this will help to build a new confidence in the shop side of things. You can also get some great videos on maintenance, and even on building the custom bike of your dreams. Read the books, watch the videos, and buy the t-shirt! Believe me, all the preparation you make will stand you in good stead.

If you really are hopeless at the mechanical side of things, why not pay someone else to help you build it, or even get them to build the whole thing for you? The cost of the kit plus labor could well work out cheaper than buying a chopper “off the shelf”.

And of course, when that beautiful chopper is standing on your driveway, and your friends are asking you “Was it worth it?” you can turn to the chopper, drag your hand across the flames on the tank and the polished chrome, turn back to them and say, “What do you think?”
