Outfitting Your Chopper with a Radio

Posted by: Kenny  :  Category: Chopper Accessories

You've finally bought or built the chopper you've always wanted, and though you enjoy the sound of the rushing wind, the tires humming, and the engine growling, sometimes you just want to listen to your favorite road tunes.

Outfitting your chopper with a motorcycle radio really isn't as difficult of a task as it may seem.  The parts you're going to need include the radio, or other music source, a mount for the radio, a wiring harness, speakers & wire.  You can also add in a handlebar mounted thumb control for ease of use.  These parts come in kits that you can buy for less less than $100.

Now, you know motorcycle radios have to be loud.  It's important to get high quality speakers that can handle a lot of power, and a radio that has the ability to provide that power.  Sometimes you might even consider getting an amplifier just to make sure you can hear those tunes over the road noise and through your helmet.  Your neighbors will also appreciate the fact that they can hear your music loud and clear.  That is a joke, of course.  Out of courtesy for your neighbors, it's best if you hold off on turning that radio on until you're on the road.  They're already jealous enough because your bike is cooler than theirs.

You have some options when it comes to music sources.  You can find mounts for most MP3 players, including iPods, and Zune players.  You can also find mounts for a standard car radio, as well as Sirius Satellite radios.  They mount by clipping onto the handlebars, but these might be a bit awkward and ugly in comparison to the sleek looks of your chopper.  This is where a custom motorcycle radio comes in.  This is something you'll want to design into the look of your bike in the beginning stages of development so it flows with the appearance of the bike and gives you the best look combined with great audio quality.

Posted by: Kenny  :  Category: Chopper Accessories

Among the auto driven vehicles, motorcycle is the most accident prone. These accidents very often occur due to poor lighting of the motorcycle. When you ride in a bad climatic condition with a poor vision on roads, a good lighting in your motorcycle will ride you safe to the destination.

So by giving safety the top priority your motorcycle must be equipped with good lighting system, if not the best. Do keep in mind that when you are riding your vision should be clear and others can see you clearly. You can fix LED, halogen lights, chrome lights. But HID lights (High Intensity Discharge) are more efficient as head lamps, than halogen lights using same wattage. These HID kits consist of 1 bulb, 35 watt ballast and a set of instructions. You can install it just by plugging it and mounting firmly in the frames. Some HID lighting kits come with 2 ballasts and 2 bulbs. The illumination varies with the number of bulbs and ballasts. Most HID kits come with lifetime warranty. Headlamps generally require high beam light, so XP Moto lamps light your way much better than any other lights in market, providing lifetime durability and also gives a better look to your motorcycle.

With the advancement of LED technology, LED lights are becoming very popular to fix on the motorcycles. These LED’s are fixed at tail lights, end lights, lights on brakes, courtesy lights and turn signals. One most advantage of these LED’s are that they draw lesser amounts of currents compared to the halogen and incandescent lamps. Not all LED’s give good and prominent lighting, so you need to choose carefully while paying for them. Fixing LED’s on brakes, sides and on the back side improves the visibility of the motorcycle providing safety to the rider. Lights must be there on the sides of the motorcycle, so that it starts glowing whenever you attempt to make a turn. These LED lights come in different colors like red, yellow, orange, pink and amber. The colors can be changed to any 7 colors. These kits are programmed, can be controlled by remote and often programmed with music. These kits are available in sets of 4 and 6 pieces. These are set in a control box and connected by tubes. Provisions are also there to attach more tubes. These kits come in complete form and you don’t need much toil and sweat to install them. On the other hand these designed LED kits make your bike more gorgeous looking adding to your personality.

You can also lights to the wheels, turning signal light, light on thee brakes to give a much colorful glow while riding. All these additional lightings also come in different kits.

To light your motorcycle with latest sophisticated lighting systems, the electric wiring of the motorcycle should be noted carefully. As these lamps require high voltage, so a weak electrical wiring system may damage the costly installations.

There are numerous agencies manufacturing these lighting kits, with varying costs, varied degree of illumination and looks. The thumb rule for motorcycle lighting is to maintain the basic safety factors followed by gorgeous looks or any other fabrications of personal choice.

If you intend to have a permanent extension of your luggage area, a motorcycle luggage rack is better. This will provide you with all the necessary luggage space you need especially on a long trip. Most dealers recommend the use of a luggage rack in case you intend to use a sissy bar bag, rack bag or trunk. The luggage rack you get for your motorcycle should conform to the sissy bar on the bike. Motorcycle luggage racks differ depending on the bike model you have. The racks also vary depending on the intended use and the amount you want to spend. Popular luggage racks include sissy bar luggage racks, mini racks, tour cruiser racks and curved solo racks.

Another major distinction of the motorcycle luggage racks is the type of operation. Some racks are adjustable while others are not. One of the adjustable racks is the folding motorcycle luggage rack. It has a shape similar to that of the sissy bar and attaches to the backrest of the sissy bar. To attach the rack you have to consider the existing mounting plates on the backrest, which can be adjusted selectively to provide a certain amount of friction fit. The adjustable rack therefore has three positions. These are stored position, upright position and the use position, which is obviously horizontal. While in the stored position, parts of the brackets are engaged to maintain its horizontal position. For the upright position, the rack uses a magnet, which exerts force to retain the alignment with the sissy bar.

You can also get a carrying motorcycle luggage rack. This one is fixed and has a mounting bracket supporting a top platform hence enabling it to carry heavy loads. This mounting bracket includes longitudinal extensions aligned to the longitudinal frame portions of the bike. To stabilize the bracket laterally to the bike frame, a pair of fingers project from the longitudinal extensions. The rack has an inverted channel member fitted on the horizontal frame of the bike moving the center of gravity to the rear of the rack. The top platform of the rack and the mounting brackets are connected in a pivot joint that allows for tilting movements. Apart from these, you can also get a convertible backrest/luggage rack for your motorcycle. This has a U-frame mounted at the rear of the bike. Locking it in a vertical position provides you with the backrest while laying it horizontally provides the luggage rack

Motorcycle windshields offer the rider extra protection from weather elements such as rain and wind, debris from passing motor vehicles, and large bug spatter which can knock the rider off the motorcycle. When making the purchase be sure to get the right fit for your bike. A perfect windshield should have a height that extends from the bottom of your chin to your lower lip in order to protect your fully from the wind and also allow you to see over the windshield. The design of the windshield should also complement the design of your motorbike. Apart from getting the right fit for your bike model, you should also consider the extra features offered with the windshield. Specifically, shields that detach easily from the bike allowing you a clear view of the open roads are perfect.

The windshields are also available in different shades, which can rhyme with your bike’s body paint. The shades also provide you with a different view while in the open country. Motorcycle windshields are available in different materials. The material you choose is important since it will determine if you will have an exceptional trip. The material that has been used the longest to make motorcycle windshields is acrylic. This material provided clear windshields. However when you drill the mounts, stretch marks may appear on the shield, which may lead to breakage. Later the acrylic shield was improved to a high impact shield that withstood mount drilling.

Nowadays quantum polycarbonate is the best and toughest material used on motorcycle windshields. It is also more resistant to scratch and abrasion. Abrasion resistance is provided by FMR surface coatings hence it is important to ensure the shield you are purchasing is FMR coated. Compared to the old acrylic shields, quantum shields offer thirty times more abrasion resistance and twenty-three times more crack resistance. Finally, you should remember that the quality of the shield is relative to the cost. If you are one of those money conscious riders who will only purchase the cheapest shield in the market, be prepared to get the lowest quality. Instead of buying a low quality shield that will be damaged easily, it is better to save for some time to purchase the best quality. However, this does not mean you have purchase shields from exorbitant dealers. You should compare prices from different sellers or even shop online for the best quality, low price windshield.

After you clean your saddlebag, the next thing you should think is conditioning the saddlebag. Conditioning does not need to be done very often, maybe just once every two weeks or so. Lubrication of the saddle bags is a part of the conditioning process. The lubrication is what maintains the softness and flexibility of the saddle bag. The use of petroleum products for conditioning the saddle bags should be avoided as it can end up ruining the leather.

After conditioning of the saddle bag comes polishing. This will help enhance the look of the saddle bag and the saddle bag will look as if it is just bought. The pours of the leather can get clogged if you overdo the polish. Instead of using liquids that have petroleum products as their ingredients, you should use conditioners which will do the job of penetrating the fibres. Also, you should apply the cream and spread it evenly and there shouldn’t be a thick layer of cream on the saddle bag. When you polish your bag, it makes you motorcycle saddlebag look better and attractive and also so that it stands out.

When you take leather saddle bags into consideration, one thing that you should make sure of is that the saddle bag is protected from water. There should not be any water marks on the surface of the saddle bags because of rain. By applying silicone spray or mink oil, you can ensure protection from the damage done by rain and can also give a long lasting look to the saddlebags. If you are planning to go for a long trip, cleaning, conditioning, applying polish and if you want, getting a plastic cover for the saddle bag in case of rain should be the steps that you should take so that your motorcycle saddle bag looks good.
